Winning Strategies for Classroom Management
Published in Paperback by Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Very highly recommended reading for beginning teachersIn Winning Strategies For Classroom Management, Carol Cummings offers thoughtful, practical advice on physically arranging the classroom, diagnosing student behavior, and responding to students' emotional needs. Her practical examples show how effective classroom management results in motivated students exhibiting self-discipline, perseverance, and who take responsibility for their learning. Cummings' approach to classroom management proactively addresses discipline and behavior problems. Winning Strategies For Classroom Management is very highly recommended reading for beginning teachers and has much of value to offer even the seasoned classroom instructor addressing the needs of a diverse school population.
The most practical book for teaching classroom managementI used this as a text for my "Managing Classroom Behavior" course which I taught at the University of St. Thomas and the students were thrilled when they picked up the assigned texts and came back and said, "After four years of theory, I finally have a practical book that I can use in the classroom." This book is based on theory and applied practical and real ways to manage children and instruction on how to teach to be a proactive manager. As a teacher, it was great to have a tool that I could use for instruction and direction in the classroom. The students were also impressed that it was the lowest priced book they have purchased throughout their four years at the University. One student took her books to Kinkos to have it spiral bound because she said she knows she will use it throughout her teaching career. It's a winner!

Aesthetics of Change
Published in Paperback by Guilford Press (22 July, 2002)

A breakthrough psychotherapy bookKeeney's unique understanding of cybernetics and human systems is presented in this scholarly work. Here, Keeney attempts to bring the wisdom of Gregory Bateson to working with families and other interactional systems, and it remains a classic in the field of family therapy. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to work outside the normal skull-bound explanations of human experience -- although it may be a mental stretch, it is well worth the resulting wisdom that results from working with both the pragmatic and the aesthetic ("the patterns that connect"). Applied Water and Spentwater Chemistry: A Laboratory Manual
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (January, 1993)
Average review score:

Assessment of "Applied Water and Spentwater Chemistry"This storehouse of analytical fundamentals simplifies the testing of substances and characteristics found in water and water-based slurries. This text features analytical procedures accompanied by parameter troubleshooting guides. Most of the procedures have been approved by the latest edition of "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater" as well as the code of the Federal Register. Review Questions for each analytical procedure reinforce analytical expertise. Calculations and analytical procedures are written for the general public and not for professional chemist, with full explanation of how the final value was derived. Step-by-step instructions demonstrate how to use inexpensive, easy-to-obtain assay materials that yield reliable results.

At Home In The Woods
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape, Inc. (01 October, 1979)
Average review score:

A glimpse into historyThe copy I aquired was published 1951 for $1.50. A young couple from Mass., after reading Henry David Thoreau's adventures in the mid 1800's, decides to test Mr. Thoreau's theories and heads to the 'new' state of Alaska. The lack of grocery stores, electricity, or 'modern' convienences pose little hardship for the Angiers, but instead this book profoundly shows how simple life can be, if we let it. One must wonder, in this day of 'futureistic' computers, if the life they lead in "At Home in the Woods" could ever be found again, or survived, by those of us today. The peace, yearning, and tranquillity that one gets from reading it seems to draw the reader to the wild once more.

At Home in the Woods: Living the Life of Thoreau Today

Great book for the mountain man or couple at heart!I just finished this book tonight and must say that I loved every page of it. It was the first book of the Angier's that I have read, and I can tell you it won't be the last. The way both Brad and Vera describe in flowing detail and friendly, backwoods banter, how their first few years were like living in the mountains and off the land, will spark a fire in anyone who longs for such adventure. Read it. It is a wonderful story.

The BestWe first checked this book out from the library and loved it so much we bought one. This is great for young chefs and the parents who love them to spend some time together. The directions are easy and they are fun to make. We made the caterpillar for a 6th birthday and it was a big hit. It made the occasion more special.

A Bibliography of the Black Sparrow Press 1966-1978
Published in Hardcover by Black Sparrow Press (April, 1981)
Average review score:

FOR THE TRUE COLLECTORBlack Sparrow Press, as most people know it, is famous for publishing the works of Charles Bukowski. But anyone who loves to read the advanced guard of American Literature, knows that BSP is actually the leading independent publisher in the world. Looking through this scholarly resource book might seem dry (it basically describes the title page, size, layout, printing history, etc. but NOT reviews, or summaries of the books) to the uninititated, but for anyone serious about 20th Century American Literature this book is a necessity. The authors, besides Bukowski, that Black Sparrow has published in its 35 year history regularly fill anthologies of "America's Best." Just to name a few, you'll find books by: Gertrude Stein, Cid Corman, Sam Shepard, Fielding Dawson, Micheal McClure, Joyce Carol Oates, Diane Wakoski, Wanda Coleman, Gerard Malanga, Tom Clark, Wyndham Lewis, D.H. Lawrence, Sherril Jaffe, David Bromige, Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, Ed Dorn, Paul Blackburn, etc., etc. New voices such as, Eileen Myles, Lucia Berlin, Andrei Codrescu, Lyn Lifshin, and Michael Lally come later in the press' history, and therefore their work is not compiled here. This is one of the two problems with this book; it's seriously outdated (representing only the first 12 years of BSP's existence), and the photos of the beautiful book covers and title pages are in black and white. Hopefully, they plan to do a new version for the coming millenium! Still, this volume is a valuable source material for scholars, collectors, and fans of the best of the best. Get this along with the bibliography of Bukowski's work by Aaron Krumhansl and start collecting!

Bradford's History of "Plymouth Plantation": From the Original Manuscript
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (May, 1999)
Average review score:

A classic American textThe Pilgrims are vastly overrated as colonial forefathers: most of them died within weeks of stepping onto shore, and those that survived largely remained inconsequential, except for two facts. They married into the larger and far more successful Puritan group who arrived 10 years after they did, and they got a better myth built around one of our national holidays. William Bradford's history is a charming, paranoid vision of coming to America and trying to make it here. The Pilgrims' history is largely one of peaceful co-existence with the Indians, except for the year after the first Thanksgiving, when the only Indian in sight was the one whose head decorated the pike outside Plymouth. A great book to debunk a largely false national myth, the true story is far more compellingly bittersweet, especially as Bradford tries to come to grips with the failure of his colony. The turkey incident alone is worth the price of the book (trust me -- it's hysterically grotesque).
